Chapter 2:

Today we will complete two activities.  First, we will "fill a backpack" with items that would help one to survive in the wilderness.  Second, we write a prediction using the document found below.  Please be sure to save this on your desktop and to your H:drive.

Chapters 1-6 Assessment:

Answer the following question on a separate sheet of paper, think carefully about Brian's "luck".  Explain your answer in detail with facts from the story that support your paragraph.

Brian has bad luck when his plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness.  In spite of this diasaster, Brian has some good luck as he tries to survive until help arrives.  Write a paragraph describing Brian's first good luck moment after landing safely.

Thursday, September 23rd:  One technique we use to become better readers and writers is using imagery/visualization.  By creating a picture in our mind we have a much better chance of remember what we read and relating the story to what we know in our own lives.  Imagining what we are seeing also provides us with the opportunity to choose vivid words to paint a picture for our audience as we write.  Today we are going to do an activity that reinforces this strategy.

1.  Your teachers will randomly select a photograph for you to use for this activity.

2.  After studying the picture carefully, you will complete the activity outlined in this word document.

We shouldn't have to remind you, but you are great readers and writers and we are looking for examples that represent that quality.  We will only accept your best work.  We can't wait to read what you "see, feel, hear, smell, and taste" in the Canadian Wilderness.

Red and Blue Group:  Brian's Survival Guide Project

Create a mini-booklet detailing Brian's methods of survival throughout Hatchet. You will need a cover and 6 pages of text containg How to... writings.  Remember, this guide is using Brian's methods, not those you may know from popular television shows and your own life experiences.  The project will count as a test grade, and it is due this Friday, October 8th.  Everyone received a hard copy of the scoring rubric in class, but here is a link to a copy in case you need it.  Creativity counts, so stretch those brains.

Tuesday, September 28th:  It's important to make connections while you read.  A dialectical journal or "2 Way Journal" is a great way to record your thoughts and reactions to what you are reading.  This is the first tiime using this strategy, but we will be using it often throughout the year.  Click here to open your dialectical journal organizer.  Make sure you put your name and number ont he top of the page.  When you are finished with responding to the chapter, print out your journal page and hand it in to be graded.

Tuesday, October 5th: This is a two part Essay question that is based upon what we have read so far.  On a separate sheet of paper, provide an in depth response to both of the questions.  You do not need to rewrite the questions on your paper.

      1.  What do you learn about Brian from his dreams and memories that you have not learned from other parts of the story?

     2.  What do you think Brian means when he says self-pity doesn't work
